What Is Fashion Revolution Week?

Fashion Revolution Week is a global inititive run by Fashion Revolution to support their year long efforts in aim for better trade practices and greater transparency in the fashion industry.

Fashion Revolution Week takes place on what will be the 5th year anniverary of the Rana Plaza factory collapse, which killed 1138 people and injured 2500 more on 24th April 2013. This event was the 5th largest industrial disaster in history. The victims were majority young women, working for the five garment factories in the Rana Plaza manufacturing clothing for giant global clothing brands.

Since that day, we have been forced to look at who makes our clothes. What conditions are they working under? How much are they getting paid? What does their lifestyle look like?

Some Garment Industry Facts & Figures

• 80% of the approx. 77million workers who make our clothes are women aged 18-35 years old
• Garment works earn the equivalent to just $80 AUD per month, which is 1/4 of a living wage
• 20% of global industry water pollution comes from treating and dying textiles
• It is estimated each year that of the total 400million square metres of textiles produced, 60million square metres of it will become cutting room floor waste
• 40% of the clothes we buy are rarely or never worn
